The village of Aumes is close to the Mediterranean coast with its long sandy beaches and fabulous scenery. The City of Montpellier is only 40 minutes away with everything that anybody could wish for…..great for shopping, eating out, visiting the zoo or the aquarium as well as the museums and galleries. Nearer home is Pezenas, famous for its theatrical connections to Moliere and Lord Clive of India who rested there on his way back home! With a historic centre of cobbled streets and spectacular carved stone doorways with inner courtyards of dressed stone, with open stairways and balconies you will find lots to see . There are pavement cafes and restaurants to tempt you and a Saturday market which is the best in the area. A little further away (20 minutes) is the Bassin de Thau which is famous for its oysters and mussels as well as the “tielle”, a wonderful seafood tart. Aumes lies between the hills and the sea. In the hills you will find picturesque villages, hidden valleys and views to stay with you long after holiday. You will find an abundance of small wine producers eager to share with you the fruits of their labours……you only need to ask for a wine tasting (degustation) and a range of wines will appear for your pleasure! Spain is 1.5 hours away, as is the fairy tale city of Carcassonne.

Aumes itself is really good for walking in quiet lanes and through the vineyards. Cycling and walking is easy and safe. The house is fenced and the pool alarmed.

Your nearest beach will be Meze, about a 15 minutes drive. Next to Bouzigues.

“SYRAH” visitor reviews

We have had a wonderful relaxing week in your beautiful villa. The children have thoroughly enjoyed the pool and I have loved sunbathing on the terrace. The villa is very well equipped and has a lovely French charm about it. We had a fabulous anniversary meal at the restaurant you recommended in Meze (The Neptune) Vic and I had a good look around the antiques in Pezenas and the kids loved the day at Aqualand. We found the area beautiful and tranquil and would love to come back and stay here again - it had everything we could wish for.

Thank you. Julie Vic and the kids.

Thank you for a lovely holiday. The villa was perfect, we spent nearly all of our time sitting out and jumping in the pool. It was a great setup for families with young children especially knowing that the pool was alarmed. Our favourite find were the lovely restaurants around the marina in Meze and watching the water jousting.

Hope to visit again, we’re sad to be leaving. Si Si, James, Ethan and Cerys

We had a wonderful holiday and can’t believe that two weeks has gone by so quickly. We are so happy to have found Syrah on the internet. Aumes is the friendliest village we have come across in France and John and Ann have been wonderful hosts. We would definitely come back again. We enjoyed our walks around Aumes, we got the walking maps from the tourist office in Pezenas. We walked a lot, on the beach at Portiragnes-Plage and along the canal in Portiragnes village. Marseillan is a pretty lagoon village which has the Noilly Prat distillery and a nice wine co-op. We would recommend the award winning Richemer Viognier  and Terre & Mer  from the co-operative in Montagnac.

We feel sad to leave this place and are looking forward to our next holiday. Ivana, Rob and Ted.

We found the house very comfortable and well equipped and so clean. Compared to many past rentals in France it is certainly one of the best. Aumes is a lovely village and we enjoyed visiting Pezenas and going to Bouzigues for oysters at lunchtime. The lovely weather helped of course!

Ann and Frank.

It was so great that we didn’t go to the beach! We have not seen the sea, so we’ll try to come back.

BOUZIGUES famous for oysters. 20 minutes away.

Before Aumes we lived in Pezenas for 10 years.

The first 5 years were spent renovating a large farmhouse with three holiday apartments plus our own.

Our son Oliver has always lived here. He is one of those lucky persons who are completely bi-lingual, and has  finished his studies in wine production.  Ann has also completed a full time wine course. As you may know, wine production is the major  industry here, in fact just down the road in Montagnac is what was once the largest wine co-operative in Europe.

John has spent his time designing and building our houses, mostly on his own, but with Oliver's help when possible.

So  if  you  do come  and stay with us, and  you want  to  know about wine, building or the area, just ask. Ann and John
